Late Autumn snowstorm could spell trouble for leafy trees

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:45:03 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) -- As a fall storm blankets the Front Range with snow, arborists are already gearing up for a busy week ahead. At Ross Tree Company, General Manager David Boswell says he's preparing for significant damage if forecasted snow totals pan out. View the latest Weather Alerts in Denver and across Colorado on FOX31 "With all the leaves on the trees we may see a lot of failure around the metro area,” said Boswell.Certain types of trees, like maple trees, are especially susceptible this time of year, according to Boswell. Unlike ash and elm trees, which have mostly lost their leaves at this point, many maples are just starting to turn color. “Those leaves could potentially catch that snow, weigh those down, and if you have structural issues in the tree, it’s going to bring those branches down and cause a lot of issues and potentially a lot of failure around the community,” he said.He says routine pruning can alleviate some of those concerns, but says at this point, it's ...

New York (CNN) — You’d be forgiven for failing to remember every twist and turn — every controversial post, weird office update, legal threat and policy rollout (and, sometimes, rollback) — that took place during Elon Musk’s first year owning Twitter.Since Musk closed his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter on October 27 of last year, he has not only rebranded the company as “X” but fundamentally changed what was once one of the world’s most prominent and influential platforms for real-time news and information. By extension, he’s also shifted the social media landscape writ large, as Twitter’s splintering audience seeks alternatives. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights of Musk’s year owning the company, told through tweets — er, Xs?October 2022Following a months-long legal battle attempting to extract himself from his agreement to buy Twitter, which Musk himself had initiated, Musk showed up at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters on October 26 carrying a bathroom sink. Belgium’s terror attack blunders tarnish its upcoming EU presidency

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:45:03 GMT

BRUSSELS — Belgium had big plans for its upcoming Council presidency. But its handling of the October 16 shooting spree by Tunisian gunman Abdesalem Lassoued, which left two Swedish football supporters dead, has since led to a series of embarrassing revelations. Lassoued was living residing in the country as an undocumented migrant after Belgian authorities reject his asylum claim in 2020, and was known to law enforcement for “suspicious activities.” His country of origin, Tunisia, had even asked for his extradition — a fact missed by the country’s judicial system. Belgium’s justice minister quit while the country’s interior affairs and asylum and migration ministers had to appear twice before lawmakers to explain why they, too, shouldn’t resign. For Belgium it’s been an awkward lead-up to its Council presidency, having wanted to impress in those very areas where it has now clearly failed: migration and the fight against organized crime. South Boston residents call on Archdiocese of Boston to preserve Sister Mary Veronica Park

Mike DelNegro has lived around the corner from Sister Mary Veronica Park for seven years, and more days than not, he stops by the shady and peaceful space in South Boston to walk his dog and catch up with neighbors.DelNegro hopes there’s a future where his infant daughter will get to roam around the pocket park, snuggled on West 8th Street, between Grimes and F streets, but whether his aspiration comes to reality is far from certain. The Archdiocese of Boston put the community gathering spot, featuring a statue of Virgin Mary, benches and five mature trees, on the market earlier this month, and neighbors are crossing their fingers that the property is not turned into housing.“If they wanted to turn the pavement into grass, I wouldn’t argue,” DelNegro told the Herald, “but otherwise it’s just nice to have a little spot with trees, open space, and there’s not a lot of other options for that in the area. That’s why we love it so much.”DelNegro joined dozens of his neighbors at the park ...

Why Oshae Brissett’s impactful Celtics debut is important in big picture of season

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:45:03 GMT

After Oshae Brissett didn’t play in the Celtics’ season opener, Joe Mazzulla was planning on putting in his new forward to start the second quarter of Friday’s home opener. But those plans changed. The Celtics found themselves down 13 to the Heat with five minutes left in the first quarter. They looked flat and slow. Mazzulla assigned Brissett to change that, and he accepted. Two minutes later, his impact was felt. As the C’s were storming back, Jaylen Brown missed the free throw on a three-point play, but Brissett got the offensive board. Moments later, on the same possession, Al Horford missed a 3-pointer, but Brissett flew in again for an offensive rebound, and the ball ultimately found Sam Hauser for a 3-pointer.Just like that, the Celtics had finished a five-point trip to cut their deficit to only three. Brissett’s effort was a game-changer.“He was the sole reason that we got back into the game, and I told him that,” Jayson Tatum said. “He came right in, and we were kind of flat...
