Broncos squandered red zone opportunities vs. Jets, a recipe for trouble Thursday in Kansas City

For as much as Sunday’s loss to the Jets got away from Denver in the second half, the Broncos squandered a pair of golden opportunities before that. They moved the ball inside New York’s 5-yard line on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, only to settle for field goals on both occasions.Offense gets tougher in the red zone because of the condensed space, but Denver’s performance Sunday wasn’t good enough. The first play of the second quarter came on a first-and-goal from the 5, and a fly sweep to receiver Jerry Jeudy got shut down for minus-2 yards. From there, Samaje Perine got back to the 5-yard line, and then it appeared quarterback Russell Wilson either checked into a quarterback draw at the line of scrimmage or pretended to change the play with a draw already called. Either way, it had no chance of succeeding. The Jets played a lot of man coverage early on, creating rushing lanes for Wilson. On this play, however, New York’s linebackers had eyes on him and stopped him ...Santa Monica Pier evacuated after man scales Ferris wheel

A trend in philanthropy almost feels like it could be a mathematical law: charitable giving increases over time. Since 1967, giving has grown at an average of 6.5% annually (2.6%, adjusted for inflation). But this year, Giving USA’s annual study found a decline in individual year-over-year charitable giving. In the last 40 years, charitable giving has only fallen three times, all in years marred by recession: 1987, 2008, and 2009.This dip has real implications. Declines in giving have a tangible impact on nonprofit organizations that depend on these funds to sustain their day-to-day operations.Janine Lowy, a Los Angeles-based philanthropist and founder of the Winkler-Lowy Foundation, explained that, under these circumstances, it is even more critical for donors to follow through to assess the impact of their giving proactively.“With a decrease in dollars flowing to nonprofits, it’s especially crucial that every gift is maximally effective,” says Lowy. “Donors should monitor and eval...Man Dead, At Least Two Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collision on Alto Avenue [Las Vegas, NV]

Unfortunately, owing to numerous new state laws, city councils and city planning departments no longer control local zoning issues. If citizens want to be heard, they should support a proposed ballot measure that will restore balance between state mandates and local control of zoning issues.
