At Home: The simple pleasures one finds when back at home

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 06:57:04 GMT

I owe my home an apology. I have been taking her for granted. Though she never fails to be there for me, I have not been there for her. Out of the past 30 days, I have spent just five nights at home. I have been traveling for vacation, for work and to help an adult child move, touching down briefly between trips to unpack and pack again.Being away for most of a month, living like a nomad, made me realize how very much I love being home.Maybe I’m just getting mushy with age, but as I returned this week from what I hope is my last trip for a while, I actually — and this is a touch embarrassing — felt overcome as I did routine tasks. I welled up a little when drying dishes, putting food in the dogs’ bowls, getting the mail, making my bed. This cascade of feelings reminded me just how much these small rituals, these moments of ordinary living, mean.Being in one unfamiliar place after another made me appreciate anew the many small ways I take my home, my patterns, the habits ...

The ruling by the court’s conservative majority dealt with affirmative action programs at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, but would apply across the country. The precedent set by the court’s decision is primed to transform college admissions standards around the country, yet there is one area where the law mandating diversity in recruitment is remaining conspicuously unchanged: U.S. military academies. When it comes to national priorities, the defense establishment has long been treated with kid gloves and afforded its own perks and protections. Draymond Green, Kyrie Irving among top players to watch as NBA free agency set to open

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 06:57:04 GMT

Some of the players to watch in NBA free agency, which starts Friday evening:Kyrie Irving, DallasThis one will be interesting. Irving is one of the best players in the NBA. He also tends to be a challenge, and evidently got unhappy over time at his previous stops — Cleveland, Boston and Brooklyn. It seems unlikely that Irving will want a short-term deal, but there aren’t many teams that can afford him, either.Fred VanVleet, TorontoIf Houston doesn’t land James Harden — who opted in to his $35.6 million contract with Philadelphia on Thursday as a likely prelude to a trade — then maybe the Rockets take a swing at VanVleet and throw a ton of money his way. The Raptors need to decide on a direction; the next few days will show if the plan is to win right now, or take some time to reset. What they offer VanVleet will likely tell the tale. He may be moving on.Austin Reaves, Los Angeles LakersTalk about a success story. Reaves was undrafted, averaged 7.3 points per game as a ro...

The request was made Wednesday in federal court in Orlando.U.S. District Judge Gregory Presnell last week granted a preliminary injunction — stopping the law from being enforced until a trial is held to determine its constitutionality — and he denied the state agency’s request to dismiss it.Attorneys for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation asked that the injunction only apply to the business that challenged the law, saying that the judge’s injunction “sweeps beyond Plaintiff to nonparties who may wish to expose children to live obscene performances in violation of the statute.”The complaint was brought by the owner o...
