KTLA -- The mother of Marty York – known for his role as Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan in ‘The Sandlot’ – was found dead in her Northern California home, the actor confirmed on social media. According to initial reports from TMZ, York’s mother Deanna Esmaeel was found dead inside her Crescent City home on Thursday.  Esmaeel was a Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office deputy, the department said, and a warrant was issued for Daniel James Walter, a man who was “seeing” York’s mother, according to the actor. “This is the hardest post I’ll ever have to write but I found out from the Sheriff’s Department last night that my mother was murdered by a man she was seeing,” York said in an Instagram post on Friday. “The emotions I have are horrible right now...between rage, vengeance [and] crying.”A manhunt began for Walter – who legally changed his name to Edward Patrick Davies in July – after he was last seen in Crescent City on Thursday morning. He was eventually captured in Cu...

Most workers hit the roads to commute as costs increase

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 04:54:38 GMT

(NerdWallet) - People who drive to work day in and day out have likely grown weary of hearing about the growth (and then partial reversal) of working from home. The rising costs of their commute no doubt add insult to injury. The share of people working from home increased dramatically in 2020 and remains higher now than before the pandemic. But the overwhelming majority of U.S. employees — 77% of them — still commute. That’s 124 million workers on the road in 2022, according to recently released American Community Survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau. This is at a time when vehicle ownership costs are up considerably.In-person workers are less likely to be high earners. Jobs in lower-earning service and manufacturing industries can’t be done remotely like those in many tech and professional fields. Lower relative wages make increased commuting costs tough to handle (along with sharing the road again with higher-earning workers getting called back to their perk-rich offices).Commu...

9-year moratorium on new downtown Austin street events gets extension

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 04:54:38 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) – As Austin’s downtown area continues to burgeon, city officials said they must maintain the moratorium on new downtown street events first instituted in 2014. The city first instituted a moratorium, or temporary ban, on new street events to keep the urban streets safe while the downtown area grows, according to a city memo. City staff have renewed the moratorium on several occasions in the last nine years. The city said that the area most affected is the Downtown Austin Project Coordination Zone, which falls between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the north, Oltorf Street to the south, MoPac/Loop 1 to the west, and Chicon Street to the east, according to a memo. There are several ongoing major projects in that area, with many more scheduled in the coming years. There are also two multi-year projects – Project Connect and the downtown Interstate 35 expansion – scheduled to start construction in 2024, which will have significant impacts on the are...

Your Money: Squeezed in the ‘club sandwich’ generation?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 04:54:38 GMT

Bruce Helmer and Peg WebbFor decades, the term “sandwich generation” has generally applied to adults (mostly women) taking care of their aging parents and minor children at the same time. But as baby boomers age out of the sandwich generation, their replacements, estimated to be about a quarter of U.S. adults, are facing new challenges. For one, Gen-Xers and millennials are beginning to take care of their (now aging) parents while still supporting adult kids — at home or otherwise — and, in some cases, their grandchildren (the “club sandwich” generation). What does this changing demographic look like? Nearly three out of four are aged 40 to 59, generally more affluent, mostly married adults, and have at least a bachelor’s degree. And, according to a 2022 Pew Research Center study, they’re more “pressed for time” and more likely to be behind on meeting personal financial goals, such as saving for retirement or paying off credit card debt. What impact does being a member of the sandwich ...

Kickin’ It with Kiz: Bad football beating the Broncomania out of NFL’s most loyal fans

I am so over this Broncos team. You work so hard to get off the waiting list for season tickets, and I’ve had mine since 2016. We’ve stunk all eight seasons. I’m not even going to the games anymore.James, ErieKiz: Broncomania isn’t dead yet, but during my 40 years covering sports in Colorado, I’ve never heard from so many local folks seeking a cure for their unhealthy addiction to the Orange and Blue. As your sports doctor, let me prescribe a spoonful of the sunshine that is Nikola Jokic. Apply ice to your pain by watching Cale Makar skate. Or maybe try a daily dose of Coach Prime. Never in the history of our fair state have there been so many better ways for fans to spend their time and dime than to waste emotional energy on a lost NFL team.I woke up Thursday for the game against the Chiefs and put on one of my Broncos shirts. I work from home and didn’t have any on-camera meetings scheduled. But I changed my shirt only 10 minutes later, because I was embarrassed at the...

Taylor Swift isn’t just a great performer - she’s also an economic force unlike any other seen before.Swift earned an estimated $4.1 billion from her wildly successful ERAS TOUR, according to an associate professor of management at Babson College in Massachusetts. But the economic impact goes far beyond what Swift herself pocketed.Software company QuestionPro surveyed 592 Swifties and, based on their responses, estimated that fans spent around $93 million per show on tickets, merchandise, travel, hotels, food and clothing. This worked out to roughly $5.7 billion over the course of the U.S. tour - which appears to be the most lucrative concert tour ever.“She’s an economic stimulus plan all on her own,” says KTLA consumer reporter David Lazarus.Taylor Swift performs during "The Eras Tour," Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Stanford football: Victory over Deion Sanders University is one for the record book

Whether it was getting run off the field against USC or allowing late touchdowns to lose to Sacramento State and Arizona, first-year Stanford coach Troy Taylor would spend a lot of the postgame talking to his players to make sure they weren’t demoralized. He stopped doing those check-ins after a few weeks when he saw they weren’t necessary.“I realized that these guys are never going to quit,” Taylor said. “They’re never going to stop preparing and competing.”That attitude was displayed to a national audience in Friday night’s 46-43 double-overtime win over Colorado – at least those who didn’t turn the game off at halftime, when Stanford trailed 29-0.The Cardinal (2-4, 1-3 Pac-12) completed the largest comeback in school history and the fourth-largest in Pac-12 history to stun the sellout crowd at Colorado (4-3, 1-3).“Guys easily could have kind of given up a little bit,” Taylor said. “But they have never done that since I’ve been here and I’m just really proud.
