LONDON (AP) — Nobody embraces an Ashes mission impossible like Ben Stokes. The England captain started the last day of the second test against Australia with his side four down and a distant 257 runs from victory at Lord’s.He was on 29 overnight, and cruised untroubled on Sunday morning. But when Australia’s smart dismissal of Jonny Bairstow left Stokes as England’s last recognized batsman, he flipped a switch. He was on 62 after 162 balls, but the tail was exposed. Sixteen balls later, he was on 100, and sending Lord’s into delirium. His third century in the fourth innings of a men’s Ashes test tied him for the most with Don Bradman and Bert Sutcliffe. The Australians spread themselves around the boundary to try and contain Stokes but couldn’t, and belief crept over Lord’s that England might actually pull off the greatest runs chase ever witnessed at the home of cricket.Stokes was dropped on 114 and 115, the latter marking the unbeaten score he ...

CHICAGO (AP) — Cole Custer was declared the winner of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race in downtown Chicago after persistent rain flooded the street course on Sunday. The race was scheduled for Saturday, but it was suspended after 25 laps because of a lightning strike in the area. NASCAR had planned to resume Sunday morning, but it scuttled that idea because of the rain and the scheduled Cup Series race.“With standing water and flooding a significant issue at the race track and throughout the city, there was no option to return to racing prior to shifting to NASCAR Cup Series race operations,” NASCAR said in a statement.Returning on Monday “was an option we chose not to employ,” NASCAR said in its statement, citing its partnership with the city and the fact that nearly half of the Xfinity race had been completed.NASCAR also canceled concerts by Miranda Lambert and Charley Crockett because of flooding in Lower Hutchison Field. The first Cup Series race on a street course is schedule...

Jordan Westburg brought in Sunday’s game-winning run with a ball into the stands. But instead of coming off his bat, it went off his left hand.A 101 mph fastball from Minnesota Twins right-hander Jhoan Duran nailed the Orioles’ rookie infielder with the bases loaded in Sunday’s eighth inning at Camden Yards, bringing in what proved to be the game-winning run in Baltimore’s 2-1 victory. The ball ricocheted off Westburg’s hand into the seats behind home plate. The pair of runs scored in the decisive inning was double what the Orioles (49-33) managed in their previous 27 offensive frames. With the rally, Baltimore ended its four-game losing streak and avoided what would’ve been its first sweep since May 2022.The Orioles have not been swept in 66 series since promoting Adley Rutschman, a catcher then ranked as baseball’s top prospect, to the majors. APATZINGAN, Mexico (AP) — The drug cartel violence that citizen self-defense leader Hipolito Mora gave his life fighting flared anew on Sunday, just one day after he was buried, as shootings and road blockades hit the city of Apatzingan, a regional hub in Mexico’s hot lands. Roads in and out of Apatzingan were blocked Sunday morning by trucks and buses pulled across the road by cartel gunmen, as the vehicles’ owners stood by helplessly. “They told me to park my truck across the road. They said if I moved it, they would burn it,” said one truck driver, who asked his name not be used for fear of reprisals. And in the city of Apatzingan, the regional hub where the area’s agricultural products are traded, gunmen carjacked a family, took their auto at gun point and used it to shoot another driver to death just a few blocks away. The victim’s car was left dangling from a bridge as he lay dead inside, slumped onto the passenger’s side seat. The execution was so quick that his car...
