How should I behave with her? Should I talk to her about her sickness?People tell me to just be myself, but this myself wants to hug her for a long time.At this point in time, she doesn’t allow hugging or touching. Is there a support group for grandparents I could access? My whole being hurts so much when I think of the suffering my daughter, son-in-law and her 14-year-old sister are going through!I truly want to be the grandma who has always supported and loved her.— Hurting GrandmaDear Grandma: The fact that you are asking this question reveals how important a role you could play in your granddaughter’s recovery — just by be...

Bridge: April 18, 2023 “My partner says he’s a self-made player,” a club member told me. “He says he has never read a bridge book. He relies on intuition.”My friend said his partner’s seat-of-the-pants style didn’t work when he was today’s declarer. At 3NT, he took the queen of spades and led a club to finesse with dummy’s queen.“East took the king and returned a spade,” I was told. “My partner won, took the ace of clubs and led a third club. East got the jack and nine, and when hearts broke badly, partner took only eight tricks. What do you think of my `self-made’ partner?”“I would have to say he’s a product of unskilled labor,” I shrugged.BEST CHANCECorrectly handling single suit combinations is a learned skill for most players. Sign up for InsideNoVa.com’s free email subscription today.OmniRide is hoping that higher fares and a larger local subsidy from its constituent localities will help make up for dwindling pandemic relief funding. The transit agency is proposing raising fares on commuter routes from $6.90 to $9 in the next fiscal year, which starts in July. Officials say the added cost will ultimately be picked up by the federal government through employee commuter benefits for most riders. But with rising expenses, plateauing fuels tax revenue and declining pandemic relief money, the agency is also asking for more from its localities. For Prince William County, the ask is $20.96 million, over $7 million more than in fiscal 2023.“Cost escalation is due to labor and just general inflation,” OmniRide Executive Director Bob Schneider told the Prince William Board of County Supervisors earlier this ...
