House passes debt ceiling bill unlikely to pass the Senate

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 11:00:34 GMT

By Lisa Mascaro and Kevin Freking | Associated PressWASHINGTON — House Republicans narrowly passed sweeping legislation Wednesday that would raise the government’s legal debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion in exchange for steep spending restrictions, a tactical victory for Speaker Kevin McCarthy as he challenges President Joe Biden to negotiate and prevent a catastrophic federal default this summer.Biden has threatened to veto the Republican package, which has almost no chance of passing the Democratic Senate in the meantime, and the president has so far refused to negotiate over the debt ceiling which the White House insists must be lifted with no strings to ensure America pays its bills. But McCarthy’s ability to swiftly unite his slim majority and bring the measure to passage over opposition from Democrats and even holdouts in his own party gives currency to the Republican speaker’s strategy to use the vote as an opening bid forcing Biden into talks. The two men could ...

LONDON (AP) — Liverpool is not giving up on a top-four finish in the Premier League, however unlikely it seems.A 2-1 win at West Ham on Wednesday was a third straight victory for Jurgen Klopp’s team and it was sealed by Joel Matip’s header from a corner in the 67th minute at the Olympic Stadium.Lucas Paqueta put West Ham ahead with a fierce strike from outside the area in the 12th minute, only for Liverpool to equalize through Cody Gakpo — off another long-range strike — six minutes later.Liverpool climbed to sixth place and six points behind fourth-place Manchester United, which has two games in hand — the first coming at Tottenham on Thursday.“If we win all our games we will be in Europe,” Klopp said. “People ask me about the Champions League but that’s not in our hands as we don’t play any of the teams above us. It’s important we keep going, playing good football and at the end of the season we will see how many points we have.”West Ham manager David Moyes was a...

Twitter relaxes pot ad rules to lure in more advertisers

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 11:00:34 GMT

Twitter under its 420-friendly owner Elon Musk earlier this year became the first major social media company to allow cannabis advertisements. Now, the platform is relaxing those rules in an attempt to lure in more advertisers from U.S. states where marijuana is legal. “Going forward, certified advertisers may feature packaged cannabis products in ad creative,” Twitter said in a post on its website. Previously, cannabis advertisers could not show any products in their ads, nor could they actually promote their sale. “They may also continue responsibly linking to their owned and operated web pages and e-commerce experiences for CBD, THC, and cannabis-related products and services,” Twitter said. The billionaire Tesla CEO has been forced to make huge cost cuts and scramble to find more sources of revenue to justify his $44 billion purchase of Twitter. The platform also removed a ban on political advertisements in January.Still, companies interested in advertising cannabis produc...
