Australia won’t promise to side with US in Taiwan conflict

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 21:38:34 GMT

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The Australian defense minister says his country has made no promises to the United States that Australia would support its ally in any future conflict over Taiwan in exchange for American nuclear-powered submarines.U.S. President Joe Biden and the leaders of Australia and the United Kingdom announced in San Diego last week that Australia would purchase nuclear-powered attack submarines from the U.S. to modernize its fleet amid growing concern about China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.Australian critics of the deal argue that the United States would not hand over as many as five of its Virginia-class submarines without assurances that they would be made available in the event of a conflict with China over Taiwan. Beijing says the self-ruled island democracy, which split with China in 1949 after a civil war, is obliged to unite with the mainland, by force if necessary. Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 21:38:34 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s calls for protests ahead of his anticipated indictment in New York have generated mostly muted reactions from supporters, with even some of his most ardent loyalists dismissing the idea as a waste of time or a law enforcement trap. The ambivalence raises questions about whether Trump, though a leading Republican contender in the 2024 presidential race who retains a devoted following, still has the power to mobilize far-right supporters the way he did more than two years ago before the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. It also suggests that the hundreds of arrests that followed the Capitol riot, not to mention the convictions and long prison sentences, may have dampened the desire for repeat mass unrest. Cohen: Trump will ‘absolutely’ take mugshot, be fingerprinted if arrested Still, law enforcement in New York is continuing to closely monitor online chatter warning of protests and violence if Trump is arreste...

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Catholic Central boys basketball team has gone this season where no other team in program history has gone before. Dear Amy: I have a very difficult and stressful relationship with my mother, and I don’t know what to do about it.I am 19 years old. My mother is an addict and an alcoholic, and she missed out on much of my early childhood years because of it.When I was around 8, she finally sobered up, but she still has a multitude of psychological problems, most likely stemming from years of substance abuse, and she never really grew up.She only thought about herself. She hurt me over and over again. She put her maternal duties aside and wasn’t there for me.Finally, I had enough when she missed my high school graduation last year. She lied to me about why she had missed it (turns out she was at home the whole time).Related ArticlesAdvice | Ask Amy: I turned down the job because of the interviewer’s question (and the no-pants thing) Advice | Ask Amy: After all my work, she gave me $20. Harriette Cole: When I got home, I saw he had read my journals and he was mad

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 21:38:34 GMT

DEAR HARRIETTE: I keep a journal. I have for decades. It’s the way that I get my emotions out and deal with my issues. In the past, any boyfriend I’ve had knew that my journals were off-limits. I trusted that nobody would look at them. Well, that changed recently. My relatively new boyfriend was at my house one afternoon when I wasn’t there. When I got home, I saw that he had gone through my journals. Worse, he confronted me about something he read in one of them. It wasn’t about him. It was about a previous relationship and some of the details of what went wrong. He read a particularly raw entry and got mad at me about the content. I immediately threw him out, telling him he had broken a confidence and it was over. To me, that was a clear violation of trust.I am unwilling to stop journaling in order to protect myself from his prying eyes, nor am I willing to talk to my boyfriend about my past relationships, so what else is left? That’s why I dumped him.He...
